Vocabulary (some terms you might want to know)
Popular Sovereignty - Governmental power lies within the citizens.
Federalism - governmental system where power is divided between a national government and various regional governments. States are given their individual power and responsibilities, separate form the government.
Separation of Powers - Powers are equally divided between the three branches of government so one cannot over power the other.
Checks and Balances - Each branch keep sin check with the other branch and does nat make a decision without regards of the other branches.
Judicial Review - the power the Judicial branch has to declare a law constitutional or unconstitutional.
Limited Government - The United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights were written to limit the powers of government. Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and prosperity.
Bill of Attainder - Establishes guilt and punishes people without a fair trial.
Elastic Clause - Congress is able to decide which laws are necessary and proper for the United States.
Supremacy Clause - The U.S. Constitution is the ultimate law, and nothing can go against it.
Writ of Habeas Corpus - Orders that a prisoner is brought back into court so they can be determined if they have be lawfully imprisoned, and whether or not they should receive custody.
Ex Post Facto - laws that are written to make something illegal but when the crime was committed it was legal they can not be punished.
Due Process - A guarantee that all proceedings will be fair and that one has the right to a fair trial and jury before convicted of a crime.
Expressed Powers - Powers of the U.S. Congress that were written in the Constitution.
Implied Powers - Powers that are not written in the Constitution but are assumed powers that the Congress has.
Full faith and Credit - States that every state must respect the laws and judgements of other states.
Privileges and Immunities - No law shall be written that takes away the rights of the American citizens.
Extradition - Surrender of an accused or convicted person by one state or country to another such as desperation.
